Nicola Atwool, associate professor at Otago University, will talk about some of the challenges of social work and lead an interactive workshop on child-centred and trauma-informed practice as two examples of current practice issues.

Morning session agenda:
Why are the two practices important? Changes in the NZ care and protection system
Dominant perspectives on care and protection
What is Child-Centred Practice and where did it come from?

Afternoon session agenda:
What is trauma and trauma-informed practice?
The impact of trauma on brain development
Implications for social work - children, adults, and perpetrators

NOTE: It is possible to register for a half day—morning or afternoon. Morning session will cover child-centred practice, afternoon session will cover trauma-informed practice.
