The Tiaki Tamariki Whakamana Whānau programme is a series of one-day interactive workshops that will help you enhance your organisation’s capability to respond to the Act’s changes and help your staff work alongside tamariki and whānau.
Changes to the Oranga Tamariki Act 1989 Section 7AA mean that now more than ever there is a need for service providers to have the skills, practices and structures that support their Māori clients to achieve improved outcomes.
Many of you will have participated in the Tū Rangatira Governance hui held in July 2020, where we discussed these changes. We also explored the Tiaki Tamariki: Whakamana Whānau programme designed to enhance your organisation’s capability to respond to the Act’s changes and help your staff work alongside tamariki and whānau.
The programme’s skilled facilitators will work with you so that you can adapt and respond to your local environment. Regions include: Wellington, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Hamilton, South Auckland, Central Auckland and Northland.
The programme is designed around a whole-of-organisation approach. Such an approach will involve you:
At this stage the S7AA programme is not offered in the South Island. Oranga Tamariki asked us not to proceed with delivery in the South Island until they had completed further work with Ngai Tahu.

We’ve heard that SSPA members want access to mātauranga, practical tools and the space to focus on your holistic hauora, to sustain you in your mahi alongside children, rangatahi, whānau and in your hapori. It’s been a tough few years for everyone, and we know that as the pandemic continues, the challenges of social service mahi are real. Taking care of our own wellbeing could not be more important right now, and SSPA is committed to growing a movement of holistic hauora amongst social services kaimahi throughout Aotearoa New Zealand.
In response, we’re now offering places in SSPA’s first ever Kaimahi Hauora Programme (online). This Programme is open to you regardless of what your role is – as long as you work in social services in our community and are a SSPA member, it’s for you! Thanks to the generosity of Foundation North, Rāta Foundation and Trust Waikato we have regional places in the programme available as follows for SSPA member kaimahi:
SSPA is also making available 30 places for SSPA member kaimahi who are based in other regions (outside of those mentioned above).
